Thanks For Nothing, Mackenzie Phillips

mackenzie-and-dad

Here I am, innocently checking out the headlines at Huffington Post, when I am assaulted by the news that Mackenzie Phillips slept with her father, John Phillips.   Eoow, god, why do we have to know this?!   I will never be able to enjoy “California Dreaming” again.

If you don’t know who John Phillips is, you’re probably not going to give a shit about this. Unless you pretend it’s Miley Cyrus admitting to an affair with her dad. Which she won’t do, even though it’s obvious they are lovers.

Mackenzie is 49 years old now, and she’s already talked quite a bit about her struggles with drug addiction. I’m sure she had a screwed up life, but why must she go public about having sex with her father? I’m thinking that if I experienced incest, it would be good to tell a therapist, but what moves a person to notify the entire world?

Maybe I just can’t bear to think that this stuff goes on.   Am I being mean to Mackenzie? Do you want to know which celebrities slept with their parents or their kids? Except for Miley and Billy Ray, I am so not into it!

If you’re a “name” and you plan to write a confessional memoir, this has certainly raised the bar. Perhaps that’s the silver lining: famous people might consider leaving us alone now.

    That is very fucked up!

  2. andrea Says:

I saw a clip from Oprah on one of those gossip shows and she talked about her father injecting her with some drug and missing the vein. But this!- no wonder she became a drug addict! Eeeeewwwww! I am only sorry I won’t be able to watch Oprah today when the show airs. You must watch it for me and review it.

  3. sarah.p Says:

I mean, I guess I feel sorry for her and all that biz.

But I find it a bit worrying that kids might process it all – you know, the Oprah stuff, the book launch – as being kinda ‘glam’ in a messed-up way, and then incest and sexual abuse risks being almost normalised? If that makes sense.

It would be so awful if some girl whose father is giving her the come-on shrugs and thinks, well famous glamorous women do it, so…

  4. annemarie Says:

I think sarah.p is right. Now, in addition to taking every drug that’s ever been given to you in order to tick things off on the list of “stuff-you-need-to-do-to-garner- full-and-complete-life-experience” (at least half the stupid things I have done were done for that reason), one must fuck your father.

  5. WendyB Says:

That story raised my hair too…though I wonder if it is true at all.

  6. K-Line Says:

I must admit, I’m kind of with Wendy on this one. When your incest story breaks on People.com, you have to wonder if the goal is more about publicity than veracity. Also, who would want to broadcast this – what benefit could it possibly be to her to have the entire freakin’ world knowing of this creepiness. It’s designed to hurt others, IMO, not to make peace.

  7. daniel Says:

To quote Denis Leary….”i think momma Cass said it best when she said…cak! …cak!! cak!!!!”.

  8. Jill Says:

The old saying “any publicity is good publicity” has it’s limits for me. I’m with Wendy. I’m not sure I’m buying it.

  9. Iheartfashion Says:

I feel like I already read this story, by Kathryn Harrison.
I’m not sure I’m buying it from Mackenzie: she’s got a book to sell.

  10. JK Says:

Well now… I guess I best send Tatum a “Thank you” note for her good response to sheer awfulness at a funeral.

  11. Make Do Style Says:

Gross. Horrid info and grim story. I don’t want to think about whether it is true or not – I think you are right people stop sharing!

  12. arline Says:

I wanted to add, that the only reason that anyone should go public with such horrible stories, is if it is truly going to be of service and help someone. Otherwise, deeply and painful, devastating and personal information needs to be shared with a therapist or an addiction/recovery sponsor.

  13. Peter L. Winkler Says:

Oh dad, oh dad, your dead and I need money, it’s so sad.

  14. fashion herald Says:

EW, and yeah, suspect. This kind of Oprah fodder sells lots of books.

    it’s getting messier…

  16. icksick Says:

ick! ick! ick! sick family. drugs are the least of her problems if she was screwing her father for a decade– and then possibly aborted his child.

  17. Bex Says:

    Ew. Gross.

  18. Aja Says:

Perhaps the whole thing blew up before she had time to control it? I feel sorry for her if anything else.

  19. Juri Says:

This is such bad news for Miley and Billy Ray. They will really need to step up their game if they want Miley to have anything to shock us with at 49. I don’t think plain old fashioned incest alone will get her, or anyone, access to a big talkshow thirty years from now.

  20. Meyieaea Says:

I do believe her….. unfortunately because of personal trials… but what I don’t understand is she said the incest didn’t start until she was 19… and she slept with him the night before she got married…….. she was right when she said consensual incest…. At 19 most of us are capable of making decisions…… she wasn’t abused…. sexually…. she had a choice… now the drugs began much sooner and he was wrong in doing that…….One of them should have had the sense to NOT do this.
I am glad he is deceased so he doesn’t have to live this down……..and I am assuming……. she went public…… to help those others who have suffered from incest as it is a hard thing to admit …. even to yourself……..

She has always been a NUT…..but I hope she finds this healing………

  21. Kate Says:

Whether she was 19 or what have you, being a fragile drug addict whose father represents a beacon of harmless hippie love, celebrity, and sexual freedom would confuse someone like this Mackenzie.

It’s all too bad, really, cause I love John Phillips’s solo album, but people doing insane amounts of drugs do fucked-up stuff, and this poor lady shouldn’t be afraid to speak out, as unsettling as it is. It sucks that she has to shout it from the Oprah mountains, but when a pain is that awful and your father that famous, you might need the whole world’s shoulder to cry on…especially with a stepmother in denial and Bijou Phillips for a half-sister.

  22. jennine Says:

does she think she’s anais nin?

yeah for someone who had a supporting role on a tv sitcom 30 years ago… she’s getting a lot of mileage out of fame & gossip.

  23. WCGB Says:

    And then there’s the brother:

“My family is and always will be a decrepit bowl of dog urine compared to Nityananda of Ganeshpuri,” Tamerlane told the New York Post. “That is how great Nityananda is.” The Indian yogi died in 1961. “Worship Nityananda, not the Phillips family. Nityananda can protect you,” he said.

  24. JK Says:

    You’re correct alittlelux,

““At 18 I was molested, then maybe three years later, I started waking up with my pants down around my ankles. And then maybe two years after that, it became consensual,” Phillips said. “So to call it a 10-year affair, a 10-year relationship, is not correct. That is something I would like to get out.””

  25. hammie Says:

She was in an 80′s sitcom and she is still alive? that’s impressive.

The rest? blerch on the story, more blerch on making it up if she did. xx

  26. jools Says:

How are you Sister? How is Young Wolf?
    xoxo,j

  27. Tobi Lynne Says:

Aw, where are you, Sister? We’re all thinking about you and your cub!

  28. JK Says:

I “think” it’s alright for me to give assurances.

Young Wolf is better. Sister Wolf however has experienced a sitback yet still, seems assured. However there “may” be a slight name-change in title – instead of godammit.com it may soon be “double-godammit.com”

All will be well. Sister Wolf is not one to long lick her wounds.

  29. Angie Says:

    Oh You Pretty Things!
Don’t you know you’re driving your mamas and papas insane

  30. JK Says:

    Oh fuck you Angie.

  31. Mark Says:

I was stuck in traffic on the 405 last week so I missed most of the media attention this horrible story received. I still managed to have a nightmare about it just last night.

  32. Vickie Says:

“Incest is the boot camp for prostitution.” It’s one of the sayings people who work with prostitutes have. Women who are traumatized over and over again as children by their families (and note that Mackenzie also claims that her “affair” began when her father raped her, that her father was giving her hard core drugs before she hit her teens, and that her father allowed a friend to rape her when she was a child) sometimes continue a lifestyle of violence and degradation as adults. That’s what Mackenzie did. I’ve known women in their 40s who were not only prostituting, but still having sex with the uncle or step parent who molested them when they were children.

Read vickiesprostitutionblog.blogspot.com if you’d like to know more.

  33. Annie Says:

Vickie you said it right. Other than victims, or therapists
very few general population people understand the
result of trauma, such as incest on young children.
Dissosciation, addictive behaviours etc that later permeate
the lives of these poeple. Her clarification of ‘not consentual’
was an important piece that portrays her journey into healing
and understanding her role as a child ‘not having the choice’!
We may not wish to hear about it, however it is quite common,
a crime and has long lasting impact on those involved, including
other family members that may be plaqued with guilt for not
knowing/seeing. Almost always done in secret and who has the
    power is the perpetrator.
Regret the news is upsetting to many.

I feel so sorry for Mackenzie!!!!
