Pam: I am an Autie Mum and I am laughing at “additional support needs” – where does being politically correct become making a disability sound like shopping for a Girdle or Bra?

There is a crew in autism world who argue over “has autism” and “Autistic”. I have been “unfollowed” on Twitter for using the wrong one!!

I guess it is just how you use it. And I will often describe an individual with poor expressive communication or a strange manner as “Special Needs” as in “That Special Needs Dog Walker just scared the shit out of me” when you could easily sub in retarded.
I’ve yet to hear someone use autism or adhd as creatively or derisively.

Oh and we had a Beauty Pageant in Australia for the “Spastic Society” – which today sounds like social commentary.

I though that the First Dude looks odd with glasses and without his goatee, until I realized It’s not Todd but some unsuspecting special needs fellow Sarah has hijacked for the photo. There’s something in his smirk that troubles me. What is going on? It looks like he is expecting something as a reward. Did Sarah promise him to let him touch her boobs afterwards?

I wonder how long it took for her to dump that kid after the photo.

Rather than dwell on the use of “retard” (which I might add I do not like) in the english language let us focus our attention on Ms Palin herself and her inability to use any part of the English language effectively. She is one ignorant “slut” and needs to be “on the bus”

Being British, I don’t know quite what to make of the word ‘retarded’. I have a 12 year old daughter with cerebral palsy and a learning difficulty and it wasn’t that long ago that she would be known on as a ’spastic’. This was a perfectly acceptable word to use and the main cerebral palsy charity in Scotland was known as ‘Scottish Spastics’. It was the way that the word was used that made it derogatory and I suppose the same has happened with the word ‘retard’. It’s even becoming wrong to say ‘learning difficulty’ in this country, the acceptable phrase is now ‘additional support needs’. I’m sure that will change in time too when enough people have used it as an insult.

I don’t get Mrs Palin’s appeal…. Do people think she’s fab because she looks nice and has tonnes of kids? Don’t they notice that a lot of what she says makes little or no sense?
