Sister Wolf Can Learn Things!

Sometimes, you forget the shit you think you know, or should have known.   Here are two things I’ve learned this week:

1. You Can’t Judge a Book by its Cover.

I discovered that a blogger I’ve made fun of is actually a very nice girl with a kind heart and a sound perspective. Halcoholic has a lot of jewelry that I can’t stand, but she has an excellent sense of humor and a lovely disposition.   I misjudged her, and I am certainly man enough to say so. I can’t wait for her baby to get here!

2. You Can’t Get Blood From a Stone.

This one I had to be reminded about, by my dear friend R. You can’t un-crazy a crazy person, no matter how much you need them to be normal. It won’t happen. It’s a rule of physics stronger than the laws of gravity and thermodynamics. Crazy people will deliver more craziness each time you come back to the crazy well.

God, it feels good to learn something.   Knowledge may not set you free, but it’s the only thing you can truly acquire in this world. Everything else is just crap, like cockroach jewelry.

#1 — I’ve been reminded of that a few times lately. And #2 — thank God I haven’t been reminded of that lately. I spent all year last year learning that!

  2. Make Do Style Says:

Lovely people always shine through. I’ve always said my biggest regret is you didn’t/haven’t made fun of me, especially as a) I would have laughed a lot and b) you could then say the nicest things about me! Halcoholic has the neatest baby bump ever!

The wisest thing anyone ever said to me was ‘only try to control the controllable’ i.e. yourself and things you might be doing.

  3. Penny Dreadful Vintage Says:

It always makes me smile when people admit to number 1. I have a great deal of good friends who I detested when I first met. Isn’t it nice when you find yourself wrong (in a good way) about someone.

As to the other, sometimes you’ve just got to draw a line under it, and walk away.

  4. Ann Says:

Agreed on all points. Love that not only have you found camaraderie with Halcoholic, but even more that you admitted you misjudged. Very few people will own up to that.

Crazy doesn’t get uncrazy, it does get worse. I learned that a few years ago myself.

  5. Joy D. Says:

This was refreshing! And I am glad you turned your opinion of Halcoholic. (I still think it is a terrible blog name but I love her posts.)

  6. Tricia Says:

Make Do’s last sentence is one a very sage mentor reminded me of often: you can only control yourself and your actions. My mentor kicked ass, I miss her greatly. And I wish I could actually follow some of her advice. I keep thinking I’m older and wiser now, but no, still learning! I just had an experience like your number one – humbling.

  7. beba Says:

You have my respect for being honest about your mistake(s)!

    Peace and love!

  8. Elle Says:

I like Halcoholic (she seems sweet) but the age difference between her and her husband creeps me out. I know, I know, love is blind, age is just a number, etc, and I am not judging but I don’t know, it makes me uneasy.

  9. HelOnWheels Says:

I’m not a Halcoholic fan (I’m completely indifferent to her blog and never read it). But I applaud you for this post. I’ve found that admitting my mistakes takes some weight off my shoulders and makes me feel less asshole-y.

  10. Alicia Says:

I’m glad you turned around on Hal – she’s really sweet.

And I’d like to add that you can’t apply logic to illogical people. Kinda goes hand in hand with uncrazying crazies.

  11. Cricket9 Says:

I made fun of Hal too – mostly because 1)her sense of humour does not translate in her pictures, 2) her vehement disclaimers about her, her husband, friends etc etc not endorsing something or rather that could be perceived as “anti-religion” – sorry, don’t remember the details. If she’s lovely in person, so much the better…

  12. Audi Says:

The worst thing about the crazies is that they sometimes have moments of sanity that will reel you in. Don’t be fooled!

  13. sonja Says:

ya, the jewellry – no. a string of bullets around your neck? please. but it’s nice to hear that she’s a lovely gal. I certainly take your word for it. sweet post, sister.

  14. Aja Says:

I like Hal too. I wish her the best of luck with her baby . . . maybe she had him last night!

  15. deja pseu Says:

What Audi said about the crazies. It’s like intermittent reinforcement (which apparently is more effective than consistent reinforcement) which keeps us rats coming back to the crazy lever looking for emotional pellets.

  16. dana Says:

Ok SW and friends, any chance you know anyone at the Rainbow Gathering outside Spokane this week? A friend’s 19 yo daughter headed there from Seattle, without her phone, her stuff, or telling her friends where she was headed. No one’s heard from her since Saturday. See news at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38842802 , and on FB Help Find Melanie Thanks for anything you can do.

  17. RedHeadFashionista Says:

Glad you like Hal – she seems really nice (responds to all emails/links/tweets incredibly humbly) and I guiltily love her style, even the mad jewellery (though I had to draw the line at the bone necklace, but I’m clearly not hardcore enough). It’s good when someone nice comes through out of all the nasty people out there.

  18. patni Says:

i am so guilty constantly of #1. I think my default position is if i don;t know you, i don’t like you. I am constantly proved wrong.

  19. Esme Green Says:

    respect to you Sister Wolf.

there’s nothing like a bit of truth in a whole heap of crazy.

  20. Hortense Says:

Hal’s sunglasses collection astounds. Plus, it seems like she really loves her man.

  21. Petra Says:

    I told you so.

  22. Dru Says:

Ah well, like I said before, I found it hard to say anything negative about a pregnant woman, especially one who seems as dopily in love with her husband as Hal. Good luck to her with the baby- and hats off to you for having the guts to admit you revised your first impression of her.

  23. MJ Says:

Thank you for the reminder on #2. I have a sort of friend who has been escalating in The Crazy, but then suddenly seemed better. I hope that she is, but will keep #2 in mind in case this is a rare break and the mental and physical manifestations come back (oh please no).

  24. SwanDiamondRose Says:

today i learnt that 2 layers of skin toned (my skin tone) nail polish looks really freakish. the only way you can use this stuff is to get so high from it as you put it on that you keep putting it on. then you forget that part ‘cuz of da brain cell lozzzzzz and do it again!

also, i heard a good joke in a movie from today, i think it was Hot Rod Girls, but not sure ‘cuz of duh brain zell lozzzzzz. but here goes- “what do you call the bastard child of…” oh damn, i forgot the rest, something about breakfast cereal.

    k bye.
