Amanda Palmer and My Nose

Last night I went to see Amanda Palmer, aware that I might feel emotional, since Max loved Amanda and introduced me to The Dresden Dolls in the fist place.

I couldn’t get as close to the stage as I’d hoped, but we managed to find a pretty good place to stand. Before the opening act started, a girl directly in front of me felt compelled to dance  theatrically  to the piped in music. I turned to my companion and said: “This is a test from god. He put her in front of me to see if I can take it.” I added that all I really wanted was to not get my nose broken by her flailing elbows.

We managed to move closer to the stage and away from the dancing girl. In a break between the two supporting acts, I got something in my eye and asked a big friendly girl to hold my drink for a minute. She was adorable, like an enormous puppy but I can’t remember her name. She works at Trader Joe. I felt happy about our  camaraderie  and excited about seeing Amanda.

Suddenly, I experienced the shock of being whacked in the face by a plastic bottle that some fucker had thrown in my direction. The people next to me had seen it coming and I turned to see them cringing in horror. I felt my nose to see if it was still there. I wanted to cry but decided not to. You can’t believe the force of a flying plastic bottle! When I got home, I saw that there was a small bloody cut on the bridge of my nose. (see above)

Why did I have a premonition about my nose? Did I manifest a blow to the nose by Putting Out a negative thought? Does everyone get hit in the nose if they go to enough concerts?

Amanda was terrific, as always. Her embodiment of both male and female energy is so mesmerizing, and luckily, marriage has done nothing to tame her.

One of Amanda’s rituals is to answer personal questions from fans, selecting them randomly from a basket. She started reading one that didn’t make sense. It was just a name, like Quinn Something. She  threw  it aside, but someone in the audience yelled that Quinn was asking for a middle name. She said “Oh, sorry, I guess I didn’t read the whole thing.” Then she paused for a moment and shouted: “MAX!”

Suddenly everything became surreal. I expected Max to appear, summoned by Amanda Palmer. My jaw dropped in wonder. It was only a second but it was amazing. I was thrilled, freaked out, then tearful.   She added. “It’s one of my favorite names.”

Was it a sign? Say yes.

And what about my nose?

Sister, I got a little shivery reading that…..

It is absolutely a sign. A sign that Max is all round you, where ever you are. I hope the guy takes the name and goes on to do great things, no matter how big or small.

    P.s

who throws bottles at the crowd? What an idiot.

I think you knew that something was going to happen to your nose rather than cause it to happen.

  3. Danielle Says:

I’m so sorry to hear about what happened with the bottle. I hate it when people are jerks at concerts :(

  4. Make Do Style Says:

It was a sign, the saying Max was a sign. Also the nose and bottle thing, I agree with sharnek, you could feel it in your bones. xx

Perhaps you are a seeker of truth. Symbolically the nose can represent “truth” and it is still deeply part of our animal instincts….our sense of smell can transport us back in a single moment to a time years before. Just saying….a lot of coincidences in your story. Perhaps too many.

  6. Stacy Says:

    I think it was fate.
Thanks for the introduction to Amanda Palmer and for keeping us thinking.

  7. Dave C Says:

Wow, that’s gotta be fate. And having a presentiment you were going to get hit on the nose just proves that you were tuning into the right frequencies for a sign to manifest.

    wow!
In HS the dresden dolls were the one thing my bass player ex boyfriend and I fought about. He thought it was all NOISE. Turns out he was all NOISE.

figures Max would choose to love Amanda and Amanda would choose to love Max. cycle of excellence.

  9. Jenny Says:

OMG – I’m not much of a believer, but yes, it was a sign!

  10. liz Says:

seriously, who throws bottles at concerts- that’s just pathetic. But yes, I have to say, sounds like a beautiful sign to me! (not the nose thing, that was some kind of douche who’ll get it karma wise)

  11. EH Says:

    That was a sign. Wondrous.

  12. Cricket9 Says:

So sorry about the nose! The other things happening there – definitely something fey was in the air…

  13. Mo in KCMO Says:

  14. Mo in KCMO Says:

    Divine…that’s divine! :)

After a very shitty day I randomly found your site after I Googled “im mad”. Too much fashion for my 18 year old male taste, but I find you very funny :) . I was reading the troll post and was wondering how you found out who she was in real life. Thanks – Robert

  16. Catalina Says:

I got shivers all over when I read “MAX!!!”.
I can’t even begin to imagine what you must have felt!!!
Yes, it has to mean something. It HAS to.

I do think, though, that if you go to enough concerts, you will eventually get hit on the nose. Simple statistical sampling will tell you ;)

  17. Suspended Says:

Wonderful! (except the bit about the pain.)

There’s more to this world than meets the eye. Some things can only be felt to be understood. Everything in this world is part of a cycle, part of a circle, and Max’s energy is still circling you, trying to let you know that it’ll be ok to be without him because, actually, you’ll never ever be without him.

much love and peace xoxo (and a swift nose healing.)

  18. Angie Bitchface Says:

trust me, you will get a nose injury if you go to enough concerts. I think it was a sign! I think he was trying to tell you that he will always be there :)

  19. Layers&Swathes Says:

It is without question a sign.. xo

  20. Jaimi Says:

Wow! That’s absolutely wild! Joyful! Beautiful! In spite of the bottle lobbed in your direction — but at least you get hardcore points for taking it and bleeding. It’s so funny (in the delightful sense) how things shake out like that, as though you’ll never be entirely without even though someone is gone.
Also fuck people who think the grieving period is over after two months.

  21. thrift store lawyer Says:

    yes.

  22. Lisa S Says:

Oh, most definitely a sign!!!!! I love it.

Sorry about the bottle chucking fucker, I hope someone poked them in the eye!

  23. Ann Says:

I got hit in the back of the head with a plastic bottle at a concert once. Hurt like a motherfucker. I can only imagine how badly a shot to the nose would smart. Sorry that happened, Sister. But you didn’t bring that shit upon yourself.

And yes – it absolutely, unequivocally, 100% for certain was a sign. Max was there. He always is, and sometimes he can let you know he is. That was one of those times.

  24. kym Says:

How many names are in the english language? millions and she happened to scream out your sons name. If that isn’t a sign I don’t know what is – what’s the chances 1000000 to 1. Yep your gorgeous son is hanging around and your one of the lucky few that get a definate sign.

  25. Rosewolf Says:

It was a message. You have been asking for one & there it is. In my tradition, injuries to the nose, especially when creates by someone else’s actions, is a message to you that the answers are rout in front of your face but you are denying them. The water bottle connects you with emotion (water) and tells you to stop letting all of your emotions cause you pain especially when they are coming out of the blue at high velocity. Sorry for the kind of jerky jerky style – I’m lying in my ex- husband’s bed, 1000. Miles.from.home trying to figure my own crap.out.
